This page is a tribute to one of my favourite characters from
Japanese animation (animé), a demoness as dangerous as she is beautiful.
Ryouko is a space pirate from the highly popular science-fantasy comedy series
"Tenchi Muyo!" (variously translated as "No Need For Tenchi", "Good for
Nothing Tenchi" and "Heaven and Earth are Useless") produced by Pioneer and animated by AIC.
Ryouko first appears as a withered mummy trapped in a cave beneath a Japanese
mountain shrine. Tenchi Masaki, grandson of the shrine's keeper and a
high-school student, accidentally releases her while exploring the cave.
Ryouko proceeds to regenerate into a vision with spiky blue hair, and
then tries to kill Tenchi, demolishing most of his school in the
process. It's hard to blame her; after all, she was imprisoned in that
cave for 700 years by Yosho, one of Tenchi's ancestors...
Needless to say, Tenchi manages to escape vaporisation by Ryouko's
energy blasts; it seems she needs him as he holds the gems which are the
source of her power in his sword-hilt (also called Tenchi). It also soon
becomes clear that Ryouko is actually hopelessly in love (or maybe lust)
with the poor lad...
Ryouko's voice in the original Japanese production of Tenchi
Muyo is that of the veteran voice actress (or seiyuu) Orikasa
Ai. While both dubbed and subtitled versions of Tenchi were released in
the US, only an English dub was released in the UK. In the dub, Ryouko
is voiced by the American actress Petrea Burchard. While other Tenchi fans
may not agree, I think Ms. Burchard does a creditable job, especially in
reflecting Ryouko's sense of mischief. Listen to these samples from the
first OAV and decide for yourself...

Though there are a great many Tenchimuyo Web sites around the world,
few are specifically devoted to Ryouko. I pledge that I will do my
best to link to the very finest sites which celebrate the Demoness, and so
put right this heresy!
