Frequently Asked Questions:
  • How long have you been drawing?
Off and on, about ten years. It started when I broke my right thumb in a sports accident, and after it had healed, I tried drawing to see if I'd lost any dexterity (I hadn't). I've been doing anime fanart for about five years or so.

  • Who taught you to draw?
Nobody, really... I did a couple of years compulsory art class at secondary school like everyone else, but would describe myself as 95% self-taught. I basically study other people's work, experiment with different techniques and try to figure out what works best.

  • Can you teach me how to draw?
No. I don't have the time, and trying to teach someone via email is a very inefficient method of instruction (and I don't think I'm that good either :p).

Oh, OK then...Get hold of artwork in a wide range of differing art styles and study them carefully. Don't copy slavishly... copying is a useful aid to learning but shouldn't be a crutch. Get books on anatomy drawing to help with your figure work. For anime fanart, see some of the useful "How To" websites like "U aRe Drawing" and About.com.

    And then... Practice.
    Practice.
    And practice some more.

  • What media do you use?
HB pencil, pencil crayon, fineliner fibre-tip pen, acrylic paints, oil pastels with varying degrees of success. I'm currently on a pretty steep learning curve with Adobe Photoshop 4. I hope to try some cel artwork (acrylics on transparent acetate) in the not too distant future.

  • Do you accept commissions?
Unfortunately, I don't have a great deal of spare time to devote to commission work. I may consider original design commissions from commercial companies - email me to discuss terms. I'm not accepting fanart commissions at this time. Sorry :-(

  • Is your artwork for sale?
<shrugs> Email me and make me an offer.

  • Which artists have influenced you?
I love Masamune Shirow's character designs, finely crafted technical illustrations and wonderful use of layered colour washes. Johji Manabe (Outlanders, Drakuun), Keiji Gotoh (Martian Successor Nadesico, Hyper Police) and Kona-san produce very cleanly drawn and cute character designs. See my anime links page for some good anime art sites.

  • HEY D00D, CAN U MAIL ME UR K00L MANGA ART?
    Join the mailing lists Nekotaku-Art and/or Fanboy-Dreams, that's what they're there for.

  • Will you host my artwork on your site?
If you think that your artwork fits in the overall subject matter of the site, then you're welcome to email me some of your artwork for appraisal. Nothing larger than 300K please! Artwork which is (a) good, (b) based on anime or characters that I like, and (c) etchi ^_^;; stands a better chance of being accepted.

  • Can I put your artwork on my site?
Please email me for permission, including the URL of your site. In any case, I will expect appropriate credit and a link back to this site.

  • Can I link to your site?
Yes. I'll have some new link banners up Real Soon Now.
